Thrifting Like A BO$$

Okay, the Book Gods were smiling down on me on Saturday. I've been dying to go to the Dollar Book Store or to a thrift store to find some books and I went to GoodWill. Usually, they don't have much of a selection in the Paranormal genre, but When I saw J.R. Ward I just about squealed right there in that isle! I got Covet & Crave (Books #1 & #2 in the Fallen Angels series) I've already read these, but daaamn. Won't they just look mighty sezzy on my bookshelf ;) I paid $2.00 for these babies ^_^

While at GoodWill, I also found Midnight's Daughter & Death's Mistress (Books #1 & #2 in the Dorina Basarab, Dhampir series) by Karen Chance. I haven't read this series, but it has been on my TBR list for a few years. I got these for $2.00 :) 

So, I now have a thing for notepads. The ones with the magnet on the back and you can stick it on your fridge. Well, I stick mine on my whiteboards here in my room. I got two more from GoodWill. I thought they were really cute and they were only $1.00 each. I had to limit myself to 2 because laaaawd knows I would have picked up one of each and walked out 10 dollars short xD

More Makeup!

Ahhh. Yes. More makeup! Every time I walked into Rite Aid, I would see these cute little palettes. But never picked it up. Cause I don't really need it. But it was only $5.00 so I thought "Why not?" They had 3 different palettes: Hollywood, Paris, and London. I got the London palette because I like the colors more. The Hollywood palette was a little too bright for me. I might like bright colors, but when it comes to makeup I stick to the toned colors. Anywho. I'm not a big fan of this product. Its ehhh. Give it to your little sister and let her have at it! Was it worth the 5 bucks? Probably not. But the packaging is KAAAA-UTE! ^_^

Candy of the Week

Okay, I know this isn't a candy. But it has chocolate!! lol. Anywho, My sister and I went on an adventure on Saturday and while we were waiting for mom to get off work and go eat dinner (because she said she was hungry. And the awesome daughters that we were, we parked and ATTEMPTED to assuage our hunger with these cookies) They weren't great :( But they did stop me from going insane xD and they definitely needed milk.

The last thing he wants is for his son to ever join this fight and get hurt.

As the years pass, however, and Andrew watches Jacob grow up and grow more determined, he slowly has to accept there’s little he can do to deter his son. It doesn’t help that Nicholas, Jacob’s other dad and Andrew’s Childe, starts giving Jacob sword-fighting lessons under the cover of playing, or that Jacob discovers his mother’s diaries and comes to the same conclusion Andrew did concerning his origins and the demons’.

Through snapshots covering Jacob’s life from birth to adulthood, watch all three members of this unusual family change, grow up, and find their place in the world.

MY REVIEW:

Where to start. First off, Demons & Lullabies is a vampire story like no other. Yeah, there's the whole "can't go out in sunlight" thing and the "dying by steak" bit as well, but as far as the story goes, its something else entirely. And goes way deeper than just vampire blood running through your veins. 

Demons & Lullabies is the first book that I have read that has spanned over seventeen years. SEVENTEEN years. You would probably think that, that is a major turn off and wouldn't want to pick up the book. And probably think "Wow, that book must really drag" or "Only 321 pages? It must be cutting back on a lot of details." Well, to assuage all you lovely bibliophiles out there, this book does NOT drag and it definitely doesn't cut out details. The story stays its focus on three characters, Andrew, Nicholas, and Jacob. Jacob is the Andrew and Nicholas' son and the story follows through Jacobs life. From when he was born and so on and so forth. I really enjoyed watching reading as Jacob grew older. How much different he is from other little kids, and not because he has two daddies, but the fact that he understands that he can't say that his dads are vampires. As Jacob got into his teens, I was falling more and more in love with him. *sigh* he's so young.

I thought the characters were all very well developed. The book doesn't really tell you when the POV switches from one character to the other, but you can easily tell when that happens. Especially when Jacob is younger and the book switches to his POV, you're getting it from a 3 year old's perspective and I really liked that. Its like you're getting to see Jacob grow and growing with him as the book progresses. This book definitely has some M/M action going on and Kallysten doesn't hold back. She'll give it to you; lube and all! I really loved the relationship between Andrew and Nicholas. It wasn't always rainbows and unicorns. There was arguments like any other relationship, but I loved how they balanced each other. Where Andrew is strict and bossy (him being Nicholas' sire and all) and Nicholas being the more lenient parent, I thought that really separated them as characters. There wasn't as much action as I would have liked. A little more demon fighting scenes would have been awesome, but there were times where I didn't need the action scenes to get that "Oh-my-gosh-sitting-at-the-edge-of-my-seat" moments.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book and was really easy to read. I would definitely recommend this book.

His father’s car was there, and Jacob tried to swallow the lump in his throat when he saw it was empty. He rested a hand on the hood for a second; it was lukewarm, as though the car had only been stopped for a while. The roof was down, and Andrew rarely left the convertible open if he expected to be gone for long. Dropping the blanket inside the car, Jacob checked the phone again. The pin that represented him was very close to Nicholas’, but as he looked around, he couldn’t see anyone. It was that steady water drip he could still hear that clued him in.

Near the beginning of the trail was a water fountain, with one of those old-fashioned hand pumps and a basin at the base. If it dripped…

Tightening a suddenly sweaty hand over the hilt of his sword, he went over to the fountain. He wanted to run, but forced himself to walk at a steady pace, giving himself time to look around for any sign of life, to listen for suspicious sounds, even smell the air, like the hunter Andrew had tried for so long to deny Jacob was.

Before he reached the fountain, he had already picked up both his fathers’ scents, along with something else, something like sulfur and rotten eggs. He’d smelled this before, lingering on his fathers’ clothes or Craig’s after they had fought hard. This was what demons smelled like.

His heart jumped in his chest at the same time he flexed his fingers on the sword. He had been trained to fight demons since the very first time he picked up a foam sword and played with Nicholas but he didn’t know if he was ready to fight one now.

A gleam, low in front of him, brought his gaze to the ground. He bent down to pick up Nicholas’ phone. His throat had never felt so tight. His eyes searched the ground for ashes and dust, but even if they were there, would he have seen them in such poor light?

He wanted to call out for his dads, but at the same time he knew it would have been a terrible idea. If there was a demon around—demons—the last thing he wanted was to give away his presence. Besides, he had other means to track them down.

Turning off Nicholas’ phone, he slipped it into his pocket and took a deep breath in through his nose. Nicholas’ scent, along with Andrew’s and the demon’s, led him straight into the woods.

He advanced with cautious steps, holding the sword in front of him with both hands, his eyes sweeping around him, attentive to any movement. There was none that he could see, and no sound other than the rustling of leaves above them, or small animals scurrying out of sight. He continued to follow the scents deeper into the woods. Again, he wanted to call out for them, and again he thought better of it. 

He was afraid—no, he was terrified—but not for himself. He was afraid of how badly his fathers might be hurt. Afraid it had taken him too much time to come to them. He wanted nothing more than to run, find them fast, find them now, but everything he had ever learned told him to go slow, from Nicholas teaching him how to be very quiet when he had been a toddler to Andrew’s slightly surreal but actually helpful lesson about controlling his heartbeat and breathing, a few weeks earlier. Slow and steady, listening to every sound, breathing in through his nose not to lose the scents he was tracking, he crossed through the woods.

At the end, both their scents and the demon’s led him to a small clearing. A stream passed through, murmuring quietly, the water flowing around the massive body of the demon that laid face up across it.  

His fathers’ scents were thicker here, now with the prominent smell of blood like a veneer that tinted everything. More than ever, Jacob wanted to call out to them, but he managed to reign in his instincts. If there were more demons, he didn’t want to draw them to him now. He held the sword hilt so tight that his knuckles turned white and approached the demon. Under a row of small spikes in the place of eyebrows, the demon’s eyes were open, staring straight up at the tree canopy above them. It was dead, and Jacob only needed seconds to find the bloody wound on its side that must have killed it. 

He looked around again, and this time caught sight of a glimmer on the other side of the stream, moonlight reflecting on metal. His heart in his throat, Jacob started circling the thick tree that blocked his view, remaining at some distance so he would see before being seen. 

He recognized the weapon first: Nicholas’ sword. Two more steps and he could see Nicholas, sitting on the ground with his back to the tree, holding the sword in front of him with both his hands as though defending. Jacob only needed one more second to know what he was defending. Across his lap, the unmoving body could only be—

“Dad!”

Ana: Welcome to Beach Bum Reads! I am super excited that you could join me today! 

Kallysten: Thank you for having me! It’s my pleasure!

Ana: Can you tell us a little about yourself?

Kallysten: I’m a French native who moved to the US for love. I’ve been writing since I was a teen, and switched to writing in English after I moved here. I was first published in 2005 by Linden Bay Romance, and have stories with Samhain and Torquere, although at this time I’ve decided to self-publish most of my work. I write mostly vampire romance and erotica, and have several series between which I alternate. My newest release, Demons & Lullabies, is part of the Demons Age series, in which Earth is under siege by beastly demons that come from another dimension through portals.

Ana: What was the first book that got you into reading?

Kallysten: I’ve had books in my hands for as long as I can remember, but one series that is vivid in my mind remains the writing of Contesse de Segur, children’s tales that are somewhat famous in France. My grandmother had the entire series in small hardbacks, bound in blue leather with a ribbon for bookmarks and I can still remember the feel of the pages and their smell.

Ana: What/who inspired you to become a writer?

Kallysten: I always told myself stories. I’d invent ‘what if’ scenarios about what happened after the end of my favorite cartoons or movies. It wasn’t until I was a teen that it occurred to me that if I wrote these down I could share them with my friends. But if I was going to take the time to write something down, I wanted the characters to be mine… and that’s how I first started.

Ana: Is there anything you want to say to inspiring writers?

Kallysten: I don’t know if I can inspire anyone but if I were to try I’d say, don’t censure yourself. Write whatever you feel like writing, and don’t worry about what others will say. There’s always plenty of time for that after the first draft is done!

Ana: Can you tell us a little bit about Demons & Lullabies?

Kallysten: Demons & Lullabies is about a family, two parents and a child… nothing more normal, except that the parents are two men, who happen to be vampires, raising a son who has some vampire characteristics. We follow the three of them from the child’s birth to his late teen years, and see the dads’ relationship evolve from Sire and Childe to true, equal partners, while at the same time witnessing the son slowly decide to become a demon fighter like his dads.

Ana: Who was the hardest character for you to write?

Kallysten: I can’t say I had trouble writing any of them. I love all three members of this little family, enough so that I gave them two long novels, one short story freebie and another freebie I update monthly and that will probably turn into a novel as well. I just can’t stop writing them!

Ana: Where did you come up with the idea for Demons & Lullabies?

Kallysten: The companion book that came before it, Fangs & Lullabies, came from my desire to write about how being a parent might change a vampire. That novel turned out so long I had to cut out a few things, and they were the basis for this book.

Ana: All book descriptions set aside, they say a picture is a worth a thousand words. What do you think the cover for Demons & Lullabies says? 

Kallysten: I think – and hope – it tells about Andrew, one of the two dads, and his dedication to the fight against demons, as well as his son Jacob’s desire to emulate him from an early age.

Ana: Are you currently working on anything? Care to dish?

Kallysten: Right now, I’m doing the last edits on Bodyguards, the first part of a new series titled the QuickSilver Codex that mixes paranormal and fantasy, with vampires, magic, and an extraordinary world parallel to ours. It’ll come out in November, and I can’t wait to start working on part 2!

Ana: Okay, last question… and I’ve gotta ask… are you a beach bum? 

Kallysten: LOL probably not. I like my creature comforts too much for that ;)

8 Legged Monsters

Day #13: What do you fear?

If there's one thing that I fear... it would have to be SPIDERS! omg. OMG. OH. MY. FREAKING. GOSH. *sobs* They reeeeeaaally freak me out. At first it was just "Aaaaah!" Now its... "AAAAHHHH MOOOOOM, DAAAAAD, SOMEONEEEE *sobbing hysterically* COME. KILL. THE. SPIDER. now.. I know the spider didn't do anything to me... I just... NO. NO NO NO NO NO! Here's my most RECENT (like this happened a last night) run in with a spider...

So... I gotta pee right, so I stop reading my book (cause I was reading a really good book that made me hold my bladder.. thank you very much Tara Sivec) and trot my over filled bladder'd ass to the potty. I sit on the crapper and I look at the floor and there's this spider just STARING AT ME! It was like trying to eat me alive *sobbing* so... my brother's room is right next door to the loo and I start knocking on the wall *reeeaching over and knocking on the wall...knock, KNOCK, KNOCK* He's ignoring me... INTENTIONALLY! So, I knock again...More urgently of course *KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK* and he's still not answering me.. So, I open the door, get off the crapper, and knock on the wall while yelling his name *knock-ED-knock-MUND-knock knock knock-EDMUNNND!* and low  and behold he comes to the rescue.. all the while the spider is sitting there staring me to my death. And my lil bro is all "WHAT?!" I'm all... "I CAN'T PEEEEE!! Kill the SPIDERRRR!" He looks at it... looks at me.. and grabs a piece of paper and starts to scoop it up. And I'm sitting there wide eyed like.. DUDEEE. when I say kill I mean STOMP AND THAT FUCKER! not scoop it up and give it the chance to run me down!!! But, he continues to scoop it up and then he finally gets it (all the while, I'm backed up in the corner holding on to the threads that are my life) and he turns on the faucet and attempts to kill it by WATER! eventually it does die a drowning death. BUT, not its sitting in the sink. And I CANNOT pee with its dead body just staring at me! So, my lil bro grabs some toilet paper and picks it up... and what does he do with it? He nearly shoves it in my FACE!!! He wanted me to have a mental breakdown... He did.. Its like he was just waiting for me to scream and go into a panic attack and then add a dead spider on top of it! *wipes away snot* So I screamed... and nearly gave my mom a heart attack. She called up the stairs "Ana?!!" I replied... screamed more or less, "Edmund tried to shove the spider in my face!!!" -- "Edmund stop scaring your sister!" He just laughed and walked away... and now I'm sitting here with all my lights on.

Okaaaay. I know, I know. Its been a few days since I've posted my daily questions. *sigh* Things happen... Time just keeps getting the best of me. So, today, I'm gonna kill more birdies with another stone.... or two.

Day #10: Why?

1. Because she's frrraaackin' gaaawgeous! I wasn't a big fan of the 70's Show, but I did like her in her other work. She's got an exotic look to her.

2. Okay.... Tell me y'all watch Nikita?!?! NO?! Oh, hell. Y'all should watch it and STAT! Maggie Q plays Nikita a Rogue agent and is frkn' kick ass! That's hawt. xD

3. Emma Stone. She's frkn' hilarious! In pretty much everything she's in. I absolutely loved her in Easy A and  also in The Help :)

4. So, I only know of Ayla Kell through ABC Family. She played Payson Keeler in Make It Or Break It,(Which, unfortunately, is now cancelled) a gymnastics show. *sigh* They so would cancel the show before they go to the Olympics... ain't that some shit? smh.

5. Nikki Reed! I really, really, really, liked Nikki in the Twilight movies. I loved her as Rosalie and think out of all the characters, they really did pick that one right. She definitely pulled off bitchy! lol. She was also in the movie Lords of Dogtown and starred in the movie Thirteen.

Day #11: Take a picture of your handwriting. 

Day #12: What do you do when you're angry?

I bitch. and I bitch LOUDLY. It takes a lot to piss me off. I let little things go, life isn't worth fussing over small shit in life. It really isn't. But when I do get angry... and this is like, you done pushed my last frkn' button and just pushed me over the edge that I'ma let you have it. My mouth has been kept shut forever and if you're gonna take the time to piss me off royally, well, you just tapped into Ana's bitchin' world. Lol. I'm a nice person, I really am. I smile a lot, but I can be one helluva bitch. And I really don't care to admit that.

Wheew. Welcome back to another week of AMAD! This week, I chose Maddox from the first book in Gena Showalters' LOTU series The Darkest Night. I chose Maddox because ONE it's October and I haven't picked a paranormal alpha male yet, and I figured, I'd start with Maddox. And TWO, because Maddox is keeper of Violence... and I have of thing for his demon ;) Possessive and cocky. Oh, but Maddox doesn't let him out to play much. lmbo! Anywho, I picked this particular scene because you can see the control Maddox is trying to hold in while trying to pleasure Ashyln without Violence jumping out and taking her... and taking her hard! ;)

 "Are you still dirty?"

   "Yes."

   "Where?"

   "Everywhere," was the raspy answer.

   He almost smiled. Almost. His desire was too dark for humor. Except blended with the darkness was wonder wonder and awe.

   His touch was rougher than he'd intended as he soaped her arms. She didn't seem to mind. He could see that she'd closed her eyes and was nibling on her bottom lip, breathy little sighs emerging every few seconds.

   "Have you ever showered with a man before?" Soap in hand, he dropped to his knees.

   She stilled, "Whispered, "No."

   I will control myself, whatever it takes, I will control the spirit. He kissed the curve of Ashlyn's lower back, then licked his way up several of her vertebra.

   After soaping her calves and thighs and biting the inside of his cheek to keep from biting her, he washed the suds from his hands. Unable to resist another moment more, he inserted two fingers into the very heat of her.

   "Oh, Oh!" She jumped away from his erotic touch, but quickly leaned back against him, spreading her legs wider, silently asking for more.

   He stroked her, gently pinched her swollen core. A shiver rocked her.

   "He pumped deep, as deep as he could go. She gasped out his name.

   He backed her against the cool tile. Her eyes rounded, those big beautiful brown eyes. Even though his lips had yet to heal fully, he kissed her, her mouth opened in surprise, then widened in eagerness, welcoming his tongue. He thrust it inside, angling his head to go deeper, to take more, to feed her as much as she needed. Her flavor tantalized him, minty, feminine.

 She gasped, and he swallowed the sound.

   He bend his knees and pushed up, running his erection against her. She gasped again. She shivered. Her hands tangled in his hair, gripping, pulling him closer. Their teeth banged together; the kiss continued...never stopped...lasted forever...a kiss of sorcery and dreams and fire.

   He dropped to his knees a second time.

   He licked her right where she wanted him. It was something he'd wanted to do to a woman for years but hadn't dared risk, too afraid of Violence's reaction. In the at moment he was glad that he had waiting. Ashlyn tasted of pure, innocent female. She tasted of honey. Passion and slick heat. Drugging, addicting. His.

MY REVIEW:

This is a really good book. My first New Adult book and I really enjoyed it. When I first started reading this book, I thought I was missing something...like being thrown into a series without the facts, but as I continued reading, I was like.. okay, this is all intentional. I'm not supposed to know what happened to Adam, that's a secret. So, I continued to read and my confusion faded. Surprisingly, I finished this book all in one sitting. Fairly quickly might I add. 

We're introduced to Molly who ups and leaves college. Literally walks out of her Law class and hightails it out of Boston and back home to Clayton Falls. After the death of her fiance, Molly finds herself in a pile of guilt that has been building up since the death of her father 5 years ago. And being back in Crystal Falls, where she broke up with her high school sweetheart, Molly isn't ready for another relationship, but can't resist Ben and how comfortable and safe he makes her feel. 

I really liked Molly's character, she's hurting and holding in all this guilt, but she's still strong. Even if she thinks she isn't. When we are introduced to Gavin and then Ben, I thought there was going to be a major love triangle going on, with a shit load of pissing matches to go along with it. But, I'm glad to say there wasn't. But definitely a lot of flirting going on. Ben, Molly's ex-boyfriend and high school sweetheart has been waiting on Molly for 5 years and now that she's back in Clayton Falls, he has no intention of letting her go again, but all Molly wants from him is casual sex. Which then leads to frequent sex and a big hissy fit when Ben finds out she's gone on a "friend" date with Gavin. I really liked Ben's character, you can tell he really cares for Molly and I thought it was really cute. I believe it helps that he's a musician ;)

I would definitely recommend this book. Love yourself some contemp. romance? Then you'll love Derailed. This book did make me cry at certain part, so grab yourself a box of tissues while you're at it. Haven't tried New Adult yet? Well then! Derailed should be your first! :)

Day #8: Why is your favorite color red?

Okay, why is my favorite color red...hmm. Well, it's not because of wine. lol. I just really like that song. I don't really have an answer for this... Red has been my favorite color since I was little. I've always looked up to my mom. So, when I asked her what her favorite color was, she said it was red. And ever since then my fave color has been red. But, I more or less like a crimson red, rather then a bright red. *shrugs* Thinking about it now, red is a sezzy ass color! topped with black, hell yeah. Pink is cute, but RED is fiiiiire! lol.
