SUMMARY:
Elyse knows what it means to keep a secret. She's been keeping secrets her whole life. Two, actually. First, that she ages five times slower than average people, so that while she looks eighteen years old, she's closer to eighty. Second, that her blood has a mysterious power to heal. For Elyse, these things don't make her special. They make life dangerous. After the death of her parents, she's been careful to keep her secret as closely guarded as possible. Now, only one other person in the world knows about her age and ability. Or so she thinks. Elyse is not the only one keeping secrets. There are others like her all over the world, descendants of the very people the Greeks considered gods. She is one of them, and they have been waiting for her for a long time. Some are waiting for her to put an end to centuries of traditions that have oppressed their people under the guise of safeguarding them. Others are determined to keep her from doing just that. But for Elyse, the game is just beginning - and she's not entirely willing to play by their rules.

MY REVIEW:
Wheew. This book is AWESOME! If you haven't read Oppression, then you are definitely missing out. We've got Greek Mythology like you've never seen it before! We're first introduced to Elyse, who is super old. BUT, she ages really slow! How awesome is that? Yes, lets all take a minute to be envious of Elyse and her super slow aging genes. *waits a minute* welcome back. So, like I was saying, Elyse ages really, really slow. And finds out just what she is (cause its flippin' obvious by now that she's not human) with the help of sezzy, boy-next-door, swoon worthy, William . William helps Elyse come to terms with what she is and just what destiny has in store for her. Elyse thinks she's the only one of her kind, then BAAAAM she's hit in the face with the reality that there's tons of people like her. And just what are they? They're called Descendants, and are the direct bloodlines to the Greeks (Gods they were considered), Zeus, Athena, Nyx, and the whole gang. As Descendants, they are to never reveal their powers (because you can't have the bloodline of Zeus and not have wickedly awesome powers) to humans, or their secrets. Doing so will result in death or aging. Pretty frkn' harsh.

So, of course, as you continue reading, you've got some romance here, a spark of it there, and a teeny bit over there as well. And you've also got some action going on. The book more or less, is an introduction to the world of Descendants. And one helluva introduction if I don't say so myself. While reading this book, I couldn't help thinking to myself, "Damn, this could totally be made into a movie. I'd so watch this" That's how good it was.

I really liked the characters, learning the different bloodlines and the powers that went with them totally played up Greek Mythology and had me hooked til the ending. There were a few minor characters that I really enjoyed and really added a bit more spunk to the book. Don't get me wrong, the main characters were awesome. William is not your rugged bad boy, nope, not him! He's the sweet, boy next door, but still exudes (if only a little bit) alpha male. Elyse, Elyse, Elyse *ponders* Elyse got a bit annoying at some parts in the book. Shes very... innocent. She's definitely got some growing ahead of her, so I'm looking forward to that.

I would most definitely recommend this book. If you're looking for something that will keep you intrigued from beginning to finish then this book is definitely for you. If you love yourself Greek Mythology AND Urban Fantasy, then this book is MOST DEFINITELY  for you. Jessica Therrien does an awesome job of pulling you into this world of Descendants and making the transition of what we THINK we know of Greek Mythology and twisting it to expand and change our perspective on it. (For the sake of the book, of course) Oppression is the first book in the Children of the Gods series and I'm definitely looking forward to the release of Uprising, book #2, and continuing on with Elyse's journey. :)
